Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti has tendered his resignation on health grounds, effective close of business Monday 29 June 2026.
Mayor Marti was admitted to Atherton Hospital’s emergency department on 20 May 2026 after experiencing a severe headache, and was subsequently transported to Townsville University Hospital for urgent treatment. Following a medical procedure and two weeks of hospital care, he returned home to continue his recovery.
In his resignation statement, Mayor Marti said that after consulting his family and receiving medical advice, only one responsible course of action was available to him.
“I tender my resignation as Mayor of Tablelands Regional Council effective close of business Monday 29 June 2026,” he said. “I extend my gratitude to the community for its support over the last six years as Mayor and during my earlier term as Councillor from 2012 to 2016. It has been a true privilege to serve this community.”
Council acknowledged Mayor Marti’s contribution to the region, noting his role in achieving financial sustainability, progressing organisational reforms, and advancing infrastructure projects including the Priors Creek Parklands and long-term water and wastewater planning.
Deputy Mayor Dave Bilney will act as Mayor during the vacancy. Under the Local Government Act 2009, a by-election to fill the role must be conducted within two months of the office becoming vacant. Further details on the by-election will be released as arrangements are confirmed.
