Pakenham East renaming delayed

Cardinia Shire Council has received a decision from Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) on its proposal to register ‘Honora Fields’ as the suburb name for the area covered by the Pakenham East Precinct Structure Plan.

GNV confirmed that ‘Honora Fields’ is a compliant name and has reserved it for use as a suburb name. However, the authority has requested that Council undertake a further round of consultation before the name can be formally registered. GNV’s concerns centred on minor departures from the Naming Rules in the previous consultation process, specifically relating to sections governing consultations, submissions, and objections.

GNV acknowledged that the earlier process did generate meaningful community input and helped identify a suitable name. ‘Honora Fields’ had emerged as the community’s preferred option from the names put forward during that consultation.

Council said it would work closely with GNV to ensure the upcoming consultation process is fully compliant, and indicated that details on next steps would be made available shortly. The statement noted that resolution of the renaming is recognised as a priority for residents in the area.

The case highlights the procedural rigour required under Victorian Naming Rules, and the importance of close engagement with GNV throughout locality naming processes — particularly where community consultation is a central component.
