Mayor Digs In, as Meetings Go Online
The embattled Mayor of Wyndham City Council is set to return to office soon, despite unanimous calls for his resignation.
Preet Singh stepped aside on April 1st following revelations he provided a character reference for a convicted child sex offender—an action he has since described as an “error of judgement.”
A third community rally was held on Sunday, with more than a hundred residents gathered at a local park near Cr Singh’s home chanting for his resignation, according to the Point Cook Wyndham Leader.
While all ten of his fellow councillors have demanded he step down, the Local Government Act does not allow a council to remove a mayor during their one-year term.
The ABC reported that Councillor Singh has dismissed the backlash as a “politically motivated campaign” and maintains his actions were legal.
The next two Wyndham City Council meetings will be held entirely online, with the physical chamber closed to the public.
On Monday, 27 April, councillors will meet remotely to consider a motion of no confidence regarding Mayor Preet Singh’s ability to lead the city.
This will be followed by an ordinary meeting on Tuesday, which Cr Singh has confirmed he will chair to discuss the annual draft budget.
