Greater Shepparton Mayor Steps Down Ahead of State Election

Cr Shane Sali has stepped down from the position of Mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, effective Monday 7 September 2026, after four consecutive terms in the role since June 2022.

Council has advised that Cr Sali will seek a leave of absence from his councillor duties. He intends to hold that leave until the results of the November state election are declared.

Cr Sali won preselection for the Nationals in the seat of Shepparton on the weekend.

In accordance with the Local Government Act, Deputy Mayor Cr Geoff Akers will undertake mayoral responsibilities in the interim. A mayoral election is required to be held within thirty days of the position becoming vacant.

Cr Sali described his four years as Mayor as one of the great privileges of his life, citing regional advocacy, investment attraction and infrastructure progress among his priorities in the role. Chief Executive Officer Fiona Le Gassick thanked Cr Sali for his service and leadership during his tenure.
