Camden Council deploys surveillance cameras to tackle illegal dumping

Camden Council has installed new surveillance cameras at three illegal dumping hotspots in Leppington, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce waste crime across the local government area.

The cameras, funded through the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Illegal Dumping Prevention Program, are operating around the clock at Ingleburn Road, Park Road, and the corner of Anthony and Alma Roads. The locations were selected based on their history as known dumping sites.

Mayor Therese Fedeli said the measure was a direct response to the financial and environmental costs that illegal dumping imposes on the community. “It damages our environment, creates an eyesore in our community and can be difficult and costly to clean up,” Cr Fedeli said.

Council is working alongside the Western Sydney Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad to investigate reports of dumping on both public and private land. Investigations can involve surveillance footage, witness statements, and evidence collection, with fines applicable where offences are identified.

Illegal dumping encompasses a broad range of materials, from household items and green waste through to building materials, soil, and asbestos.

Residents can report incidents by contacting Camden Council on 13 22 63, through the Council’s online reporting tool, or via the NSW EPA’s RID Online portal.
