Date: 3rd July 2026
Banyule City Council has confirmed the resignation of Beale Ward Councillor Elizabeth Nealy, effective 3 July 2026.
Cr Nealy had represented Beale Ward since being elected in 2020, and served as Mayor in both the 2021–22 and 2024–25 terms.
In a statement released by Council, Ms Nealy said it had been a privilege to serve the Banyule community since her election, and pointed to achievements including advocacy work and community-focused decision-making and planning over her time in the role. The statement gave no reason for the resignation.
Council has notified the Minister for Local Government, the Victorian Electoral Commission and other relevant agencies of the resignation. Under the Local Government Act, a vacancy on Council requires a by-election.
Banyule Council said further details on the timing and conduct of the by-election would be provided to the community in due course.
The remaining eight councillors will continue to represent Banyule until a new councillor is elected to Beale Ward.
Council has encouraged Beale Ward residents to direct enquiries to Mayor Alison Champion or any other Banyule councillor in the interim.
